Baby Photos of MUSP Study Children
Early in 2003, the MUSP project was invited to be part of the opening exhibition of the new Museum of Brisbane (MoB). This museum was designed to celebrate Brisbane and its people, heritage, and history and opened at City Hall on 25 October 2003.
The MUSP display represented one section of the new museum's Bite the Blue Sky: Brisbane Beginnings exhibition, situated on the ground floor of City Hall, Brisbane. The MUSP display was entitled Born in Brisbane and included a wallpaper of around 700 baby photos of the children in the MUSP study. The exhibition remained open to the public until 4 April 2004.
How was the display developed?
In early June 2003, around 2,600 letters were sent out to MUSP families inviting them to donate a non-returnable baby photo by mail, or to send a baby image via email, to staff at the MoB. The MUSP21 research team regrets that they were unable to send invitation letters to all study families about the exhibition. We were limited to sending letters to only those who had at that stage been sent mail-out questionnaires or completed interviews as part of the current follow-up. It simply was not possible to contact all families within the time available leading up to the exhibition. However, we hope that as many MUSP families as possible were able to visit and enjoy the exhibition.
The MoB also placed satellite displays of the MUSP baby photos in two of the libraries at The University of Queensland and on Level 2 of the Mater Adult Hospital. These smaller displays also attracted much interest from the public.
The MUSP project team greatly appreciates the willingness of so many families to assist the development of the exhibition by sending in their baby photos, as well as the support given to MUSP by the MoB. Feedback from MoB indicates that the baby wall was one of the most popular exhibits while it was on display at City Hall between 2003 and 2004.
